Friends of Camp Utmost, from its inception, have enjoyed watching the creative Hand of God. Acquiring land and building a new camp, forced by the lost lease rather than a desire to "build bigger and better barns," has been a marvel of standing at the Window of Heaven and watching God provide. At that new beginning, Lindy Myers began gathering logs, Gale Fister started looking at property, and Steve Fawcett began long-range plans. You, the prayers and givers; you, the servants of God in scattered places; you have allowed Him to work through you to make this possible. And if you haven't walked over the grounds and through the beautiful new lodge, come see what God is doing! At the dedication service, Camp Utmost director Steve Fawcett acknowledged, "It's risky business acknowledging all those who invested time, talent, money to build this camp, but the efforts of key servants must be acknowledged. Lindy Myers, Wayne Hightower, Orion Heath, Gale Fister, and Skip Barndt head the list. For these and all the others, all I can say is to God be the glory. It is a joint effort; God gets the credit. This is a First Thessalonians 5:24 effort either He will do it or we spin our wheels and sweat. To God be the glory." Camp Utmost was founded in 1958, and as Frank Jackson reminisces, "That was back when we washed in the creek, hauled drinking water, and played ‘Capture the Flag’ from one mountain to the other." They sent kids home with an occasional sprained ankle, but many with new hearts. For you who may live far away and wonder at the focus, the emphasis, and the energies expended throughout Mission churches and at both camps, founder Gale Fister, clarifies: "When an organization stops focusing on people and focuses on 'stuff' that is the problem. We do not want to create an idol of camp. They have planned a beautiful thing, but remember it is still things. Camp is about kids." When statistics show that 85% of Christians in the world today were saved between the ages of 4 and 13, it's smart business to emphasize work with kids. Make it beautiful here (at Camp Utmost), yes, but what comes first is the kids. I came here to win rural people to Jesus. I am here, not for Camp Utmost, not for Rocky Mountain Bible Mission, but for God; to win kids for Christ. Steve Fawcett tells a brief story: "When digging for the foundations, we ran into sand and then gravel, expensive building materials, already on site there since The Floodjust waiting for Camp Utmost." "A friend that sticks closer than a brother that is what you are to this mighty work of God. Many of you have sacrificially given of time, money, and skills. Many of you continue to give, not because you are building a monument but because you are responding to the opportunity God has given you to serve His children and His work. Much remains to accomplish; opportunities still abound. The doors still swing open to servants of the most high God who desire to please Him. That includes room for you. |
