RENDEZVOUS

Fly Fishing Retreat Casts a Line for Men

Q: What do you catch when you invite a world-class fly fisherman and Bible seminarian to the shimmering lakes and rivers of the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness? What do you reel in when you tie practical fishing tips with astute Bible teaching and four-star meals?

A: Elohim Camp and Retreat Center’s first fly-fishing retreat was a success from start to finish!

Eight eyes intently observe as Duane Dunham ties.Dr. Duane Dunham was the featured guest speaker for this May event. He is a former professor at Western Baptist Seminary in Portland as well as a fly-fishing expert. He led two teaching sessions including one on "every word that proceeds out of the mouth..." and the accountability factor of choosing your words carefully. A session on the art of tying flies was followed by practical sessions on casting, fishing tactics, and choosing fly patterns.

Two local guides who participated in the retreat were excited about the Christian fellowship and future outreach possibilities.

"Bend your elbow not your wrist," Blake Haugen and the other men heard over and over. The fifteen men shared the sentiments of Dunham who declared "the food is worth the retreat alone." Bill Colson’s fare was in top form.

This is one of six specialized retreats Elohim is having this spring. Next year a Northwest Regional fly fishing retreat is being planned as an evangelistic outreach and opportunity for Christian fellowship.
