RENDEZVOUS

Hugh Butler, a Soldier, Still Marching

by Scott Ambo, Hot Springs

In his younger days, Hugh Butler marched across Europe into Germany during some of the darkest days of World War II. He knows for certain that God protected him from the death and destruction that nipped at his heels.

In the years since, he has been a soldier for Christ marching down the street and around the corner to the Hot Springs Bible Church. Hugh is our senior deacon and has been the old faithful that has made certain that the chores get done. He has watered, mowed and shoveled and fixed more things around the Bible Church than most of us are aware.

About five years ago, the need was recognized for a sizable activity room that could be used primarily for youth ministry. The process of planning and saving began.

Early on, it was obvious to the church family that Hugh was the man to oversee this project. For the next couple of years the church building committee entertained different ideas from rebuilding to remodeling to relocating even to reconsidering. As things got tossed back and forth, Hugh drew up numerous plans and drawings before we finally arrived at a decision.

From planning to ground breaking, to construction, to clean up, Hugh was ever present on the project. As with any project, unseen problems arose and had to be dealt with. It seems like God always throws a few in to help us grow. I am sure that we were all encouraged by Hugh's determination to just keep marching. God has provided us with this great tool for ministry.

Thanks, Hugh, for your faithfulness!
